Prayer changes things.
When people meet to discuss difficult or contentious issues it is very helpful to surround the conversation with prayer. In this way we acknowledge our dependence on the wisdom and leading of the Holy Spirit...and that no one of us has all of the truth.
Prayer helps us to remember that regardless of our different points of view, each of us is beloved of God and deserving of respect and kindness. Prayer can help us be both gentle and courageous in speaking our own truth ... and in listening to the truth of other believers.
When choosing prayer leaders and readers, be sure to include a diverse representation of perspectives.
Use candles, flowers, incense and music to create a prayerful atmosphere. This reinforces the message that this is not a debate where there are "winners" and "losers" but a community of believers seeking the wisdom of God.
If the prayer suggestions offered here are too long or do not suit, feel free to adapt them for your group. At the very least make sure you open your conversation with an invocation to the Holy Spirit and close it with prayers of gratitude.
Prayer changes things.
